Slide 1
Rotations, Reflections, and Translations in Nature
Snowflake Symmetry
Slide 2
Snowflakes are all six sided because of their chemistry
Snowflakes are made of water molecules
Water molecules are “polar” – they have an electrical charge
The charge makes the molecules look like Mickey Mouse!
Slide 3
Three water molecules that stick together form the base of the snowflake
Slide 4
These keep adding more until it gets so heavy it falls to the ground
Slide 5
Snow is very heavy
When snow piles up, it can fall in an avalanche
Avalanches can be very dangerous, so watch out for warning signs in mountainous areas
Slide 6
Just a few of millions….
Slide 7
….and a few more because I love them.
Slide 8
…and what family is complete without a few oddballs?
Slide 9
Frost forms on windows and plants. It must have a catalyst.
Slide 10
Water is a marvelous thing!
